The rug should be large enough to have at least the front legs of all furniture pieces on it. Leave 12-18" of floor showing around the edges.

Choose a rug that extends at least 24-30" beyond the table on all sides so chairs remain on the rug when pulled out.

Place the rug under the lower two-thirds of the bed with 18-24" extending on each side and the foot of the bed.
