A beautiful border needs space between its plants. Try a measured layout for one planting group, see how the spacing changes the count, and carry those decisions into your next garden concept.
Give each plant its space
Use the centre-to-centre spacing for your chosen plant. In metres, 50 cm is 0.5; in feet, 18 inches is 1.5.
Take these details into your garden design

Each dot is a plant centre. This grid leaves at least half the selected spacing at each edge. It does not identify plants or infer measurements from a photo.
Check the plant label for mature spread. For a mixed border, work out each planting group separately and leave clear access to paths.
Plan one group at a time
Use the open rectangle available for planting, leaving out paths, trees and seating. This layout uses equal spacing in straight rows. Work out larger shrubs and smaller perennials separately instead of giving every plant the same gap.
Choose the spread, then the look
